Data Source
1990 U.S. Census; 2020 U.S. Census; American Community Survey (ACS), 5-Year Estimates
Data notes
5-Year Estimates: Each year of data shown is a “5-year estimate,” or an average of data collected over a five year period. 5-year estimates are used to increase the reliability of the data at small geographies like neighborhoods and census tracts. The years noted in this dataset represent the final year of the five year average (e.g. “2010” represents 2006-2010 data, “2011” represents 2007-2011 data, and so on).
More About Racial/Ethnic Makeup: The racial classifications used by the Census Bureau reflect a social definition of race recognized in the United States, not a biological, anthropological, or genetic definition. Furthermore, the Census definitions include racial and national origin or sociocultural groups. The racial/ethnic makeup data can shed light on neighborhood change, and the neighborhood demographics of a community.

Table Notes for Racial/Ethnic Makeup: The table includes the following racial/ethnic populations that weren’t included in this table’s associated visualization. The following populations are: AIAN, NHOPI, Other, and Two or More (For the definitions of each of these populations, see the “Variable Definition” text above). It is important to note that the Census Bureau has altered their racial categories and definitions over time. In 1990 the Census didn’t include the NHOPI population, but rather grouped them under the broader Asian category; this would change in the 2000 Census, where the Asian population and NHOPI population are separated. Similarly, in 1990, the Census didn’t include the Two or More population, which identifies multi-racial people, but this would change in the 2000 Census. One last important consideration to note is that there may be data accuracy issues with smaller populations, within small geographies, such as we have for the racial categories present in the table above, for the USC Area.
